2011-2012 Entrepreneur of the Year

Jacob Young- Pirate Jake's Yerba Mate Company

Jacob Young, a Metropolitan State College Management student working on a Center for Innovation Entrepreneurship Certificate considers himself a social entrepreneur waiting to happen.  He is the owner of “Pirate Jake’s” Yerba Mate, Co., a manufacturer and wholesaler of uniquely crafted tea recipes with the core ingredient being Yerba Mate.

“Pirate Jake” attests that the tea market is projected to expand by more than $7 billion by 2013, with nearly three quarters of that growth from the specialty and premium markets he is targeting.

Jake notes that the Pasteur Institute and the Paris Scientific Society recognized Yerba Mate as containing practically all the vitamins to sustain life, Mate being a more potent antioxidant than Vitamin C.

Jake’s products are sold to coffee shops and restaurants in tea bags, loose bulk, as well as ready to drink bottles.  Jake’s plans include expanding his market to sporting venues, local fairs, festivals and salons.
